Maya is a happy and smart 19-month old girl, growing up in Wiesbaden, Germany with her British father Sanj, her Dutch mother Annemieke and her little sister Leela.
Maya suffers from a form of cerebral palsy called hemiplegia.
Maya is lucky: she is only mildly affected by the condition, meaning that she has no (obvious) gross motor function delays or disabilities. She can walk, dance and climb stairs without difficulty.
However, controlling her right arm and hand is more challenging for her. Because of the high muscle tone in this part of her body, she has difficulty manipulating objects such as toys. Her wrist is weak and supination is almost impossible. She has no "pincer grip" (thumb and index finger), or any other grip, and cannot let go of objects that are put into her hand. She also can't use her right hand to hold on to something. Of course, this frustrates her in play and later on in life it may frustrate her even more.

Wish I had an inflatable pool like that one and although, it may be a bit tough to fit into the backpack it would be great as most hostels don't seem to have pools! Good luck with the trip.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is also good to see, that she has absolute control of picking shit out of the pool and eating it.. love the vid. will be logged on constantly to watch progress..
ReplyDeleteI am an Occupational Therapy student and am writing a research paper on this type of therapy. Thank you for posting this; it was not only informative but inspirational. I may also show this to my class. Go sweet little Maya!
