Yesterday during the afternoon session, Maya did her first grasping. Her technique was still very far from perfect, but at least it's something we can work on! Slowly but steadily we're seeing progress. Last night she surprised us by picking up a small piece of plastic from the floor. Way to go Maya! After that, she deserved a snack, which she tried to share with her opa:
The biggest challenge during therapy is the high muscle tone in her hand and wrist, that kicks in when she's tired, irritable or concentrating on a task. Brittny stretches her arm and hand in the morning in an effort to make them less tight. We will have to keep doing this regularly when we're home. We will also take the cast with us (it's removable and washable) so that we can continue with the constraint therapy in Germany.
All in all, considering the intensity and duration of this treatment, Maya is being a very brave girl. OK - she makes a fuss occasionally, but most of the time she's very sweet and funny! Thanks to Brittny... Maya's oma compared her to a horse whisperer yesterday (let's say toddler whisperer!), which says it all.
